About your tours
Phil is an experienced Archaeologist and teacher who has used his research of sites in Brittany and the British Isles to put together a series of fascinating archaeological tours. He will personally take you on a journey back through time.
Your tours will be centred upon locations within 20 miles (roughly 30 minutes) of Rohan and each tour has been designed with a specific aim in mind.
Your first tour, The Locminé Loop, takes place in the afternoon and will give you a flavour of the sheer range of differing monuments to be found in the Breton countryside. There are some “oohs” and “aahs” and some definite “wows”. Please be aware that not all the sites are accessible for people with mobility problems and there will be some slip, trip and bump hazards, but this is a great tour for those who like to absorb themselves in a landscape and don’t mind getting a little mucky.
Tours two and three take place on the following day and we recommend taking a delicious packed lunch which is available by prior arrangement.
In the morning you will enjoy the Ménéac Markers tour. This short tour starts in La Trinité-Porhoët and links together a series of similar monuments which, at first site, appear not to have much connection to each other. The story they have to tell, however, shows just how well prehistoric people understood the land they lived in.
After enjoying our picnic lunch we will then head west for about 35 minutes to take the Guerlédan Heights tour. The last of your three tours will take you through some beautiful scenery to visit a cluster of “allée couverte” tombs, ending with a truly unique monument that speaks volumes about the role of ritual and religion throughout human history.
As with your first tour, there are some slip and trip hazards which mean that they are not suitable for guests with limited mobility. There are also some short, but steep slopes to be aware of which might leave you puffing a little! As with any outdoor activity we would remind you to dress appropriately for the weather, and to ensure that you come equipped with hats, bottled water, suncream … or waterproofs!
